Como House & Garden offers a range of learning experiences for students of all ages.

We offer a formal structured day program for primary school groups and a special field work exercise for VCE Geography students. Please click here for details of our new VCE Geography Field exercise. Alternatively, We are happy to arrange specialist tours focusing on specific curriculum.

Students can compare the life of 19th century children and families to their own contemporary experiences on a tour of the house where the lives of the 19th Century children are brought to life.

They can learn about the hardships of working life in the servants quarters by handling and examining old domestic utensils and objects to work out their original purpose. They can explore the 5 acres of gardens on a tour with the Gardener and discover the importance of the garden for food as well as leisure. After lunch students can enjoy an afternoon of Old Fashioned Games. We can tailor this program to match your curriculum.

Some primary school students play the part by dressing up for the occasion. Information about simple costumes and props is available at the time of booking and we encourage students to do this to make the most of their visit.

House Tour-

Allow your students to step back in time and view a 19th century home, complete with original furnishings. Students will be connected to the period with stories of the 10 Armytage children; where they ate, slept and played. Children will get a chance to answer the questions: how was life different back then? how did they dress? what were their favourite activities? among many others.

Detectives-

Students are given the chance to touch objects from the olden days, allowing them to connect with the past in a hands on experience. They are given clues to decipher these strange looking objects and understand their importance and vital necessity in a time long ago.

Garden Tour-

A garden tour is not only an opportunity to walk in Como's beautiful heritage garden, but also a chance to gain an understanding of the Armytage's reliance on the land. Emphasis is placed on the fact that Como was self- sustainable, with its vegetables coming from the garden, fruit from the orchards, meat from their regional farms, milk from the cows and water from the property's underground wells.

Old Fashioned Games-

After learning all about the 19th century resident children of Como, students will be given the opportunity to let off some steam on the croquet lawn, learning about the games that children played in the olden days. A variety of games are offered and may include quoits, skittles, croquet, egg & spoon races, badmitton and skipping rope.

Other features of Como's primary school program include:

- x2 Como posters and x2 Como snow domes given to the group as a memento of their visit

- Accompanying teachers, staff and parents are allowed free entry. (minimum 1 adult, maximum 2 adults for every 10 students to supervise the students)
